On This Day: April 29 1988 - Sunset Premiered in Theaters
On this day April 29 1988, the mystery western film Sunset premiered in theaters. Directed by Blake Edwards, the movie starred Bruce Willis, James Garner, Mariel Hemingway, Kathleen Quinlan, Jennifer Edwards, Malcolm McDowell, and M. Emmet Walsh.

Set in late 1920s Hollywood, the film imagined a fictional meeting between legendary lawman Wyatt Earp and silent film star Tom Mix as they became tangled in a real life murder mystery. Combining classic western themes with old Hollywood glamour, Sunset had an ambitious concept but struggled to connect with audiences.

Despite a budget of 19 million dollars, the film only made 4.5 million at the box office. Over the years it gained some appreciation for its unique setting and performances, especially from James Garner.

Fun fact: James Garner had previously played Wyatt Earp in the 1967 film Hour of the Gun making Sunset his second time portraying the famous lawman.
