On This Day: April 25, 1986 - Violets Are Blue Premiered in Theaters
On this day April 25, 1986, the romantic drama Violets Are Blue premiered in theaters. Directed by Jack Fisk, the film starred Sissy Spacek, Kevin Kline, and Bonnie Bedelia. It told the story of a photojournalist who returns to her hometown after years abroad and reconnects with her high school sweetheart, now married and running a beachfront inn.

The film explored themes of nostalgia, lost love, and the emotional pull of unfinished relationships. Though beautifully shot with strong performances from both Spacek and Kline, the movie underperformed at the box office, earning just 4.7 million on a 10 million dollar budget. It was Jack Fisk’s directorial debut after years of working as a production designer, including on earlier films with his wife, Sissy Spacek.

Fun fact: Director Jack Fisk and Sissy Spacek were married in real life and worked together on multiple projects before and after this film.

Trivia question: What romantic drama released in 1986 marked the directorial debut of a longtime production designer and featured his real life wife in the lead role?
