On this day, January 6, 1984, Blue Thunder premiered on ABC. Based on the 1983 action film of the same name, the TV series brought the high-tech helicopter and action-packed missions to the small screen.

The show starred James Farentino as Frank Chaney, a Vietnam veteran turned pilot, alongside a memorable supporting cast that included Dana Carvey as Clinton Wonderlove, Bubba Smith as Bubba Kelsey, and Dick Butkus as Ski Butowski. While the film focused on political intrigue, the series leaned into episodic action and camaraderie among the team.

Despite its promising concept and cast, Blue Thunder struggled to find its footing and was canceled after just one season with 11 episodes. However, it remains a nostalgic favorite for fans of 80s action TV.

Fun Fact: Dana Carvey, who played Clinton Wonderlove, went on to achieve fame just two years later as a cast member on Saturday Night Live.

Do you remember Blue Thunder? How does it compare to other 80s action shows like Airwolf?
