On this day, November 3, 1981, the family drama Father Murphy premiered on NBC. Starring former NFL star Merlin Olsen, the show ran for two seasons with a total of 34 episodes. Set in the late 19th century, Father Murphy followed John Michael Murphy, a man who poses as a priest to help orphaned children. The series brought warmth and adventure to prime-time TV and became a favorite among fans of family dramas.

Fun Fact! Merlin Olsen, who starred as Father Murphy, was a 16-time Pro Bowler with the Los Angeles Rams and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982!
