On this day September 12, 1987, Showtime at the Apollo premiered in syndication, marking the beginning of one of the most iconic showcases for new talent. The show ran for an impressive 22 seasons, featuring 1,094 episodes, and became a launching pad for many aspiring performers across various genres. Hosted at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, Showtime at the Apollo was known for its famous amateur night, where audience reactions could make or break a performer’s career.

Fun Fact!

Lauryn Hill, who would later become a Grammy-winning artist with The Fugees and as a solo artist, was booed off the stage during her performance at the Apollo in 1987 when she was just 13 years old. This early setback didn’t stop her from becoming one of the most influential artists in music history.
