On this day, November 2, 1988, Super Mario Bros. 2 was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in Europe. This highly anticipated sequel to Super Mario Bros. introduced new gameplay mechanics, such as the ability to pick up and throw items, and gave players the option to play as Mario, Luigi, Toad, or Princess Toadstool, each with unique abilities.
