On this day June 18, 1982, the Cold War techno thriller Firefox was released nationwide in theaters. Directed by and starring Clint Eastwood, the film followed a former U.S. pilot sent on a covert mission to steal a Soviet fighter jet that could be controlled by thought alone.

The movie had an early limited premiere in Washington DC on June 13 before expanding across the country. With a production budget of 21 million dollars, Firefox combined espionage, military intrigue and science...
