On This Day: June 18, 1982 - Firefox Premieres in Theaters
On this day June 18, 1982, the Cold War techno thriller Firefox was released nationwide in theaters. Directed by and starring Clint Eastwood, the film followed a former U.S. pilot sent on a covert mission to steal a Soviet fighter jet that could be controlled by thought alone.

The movie had an early limited premiere in Washington DC on June 13 before expanding across the country. With a production budget of 21 million dollars, Firefox combined espionage, military intrigue and science fiction into a tense and visually ambitious film.

Eastwood played Mitchell Gant, a veteran tormented by past trauma, sent into enemy territory to intercept the fictional MiG 31 Firefox. The film grossed 46.7 million dollars at the box office and became a modest hit, standing out for its early use of computer generated effects.

80s insight: Firefox captured the decade’s Cold War fears and fascination with emerging technology. It proved that Clint Eastwood could blend classic stoicism with 80s style spectacle.
