On this day, December 20, 1984, Jonelle Matthews, a 12-year-old girl from Greeley, Colorado, suddenly disappeared from her home. The case remained unsolved for decades until her remains were discovered in 2019, nearly 15 miles from where she vanished.

It was later determined that Jonelle had died from a gunshot wound to the head. In 2020, Steven Pankey, a former neighbor who had long been a person of interest, was arrested and convicted of her murder. In 2022, he was sentenced to life in prison, finally bringing closure to this decades-long mystery.
