VHS Shelf Entry #012
Halloween III:
Season of the Witch (1982)
Directed by: Tommy Lee Wallace
Starring: Tom Atkins, Stacey Nelkin, Dan O’Herlihy, Ralph Strait, Michael Currie
Studio: Universal Pictures
Original Release: October 22, 1982
VHS Release: 1983
Tagline: The night no one comes home

This was the Halloween movie that broke all the rules. No Michael Myers. No babysitters. Just an eerie tale about masks, mind control, and the television broadcast that would end Halloween forever. Some viewers rejected it at first but over time Halloween III became a cult favorite with its own strange magic.

It was moody dark and full of 80s weirdness. The Silver Shamrock jingle was burned into your brain before the credits rolled. For horror fans who like their scares strange this one was a treasure on the shelf.

Trivia:
  • The film was originally intended to kickstart a new Halloween anthology series with different stories each year
  • The Silver Shamrock theme is a reworked version of London Bridge is Falling Down
  • Director Tommy Lee Wallace also played the shape in parts of the original Halloween
  • Real insects and snakes were used during some of the mask test scenes
  • The town of Santa Mira was the same fictional location used in Invasion of the Body Snatchers
  • The film includes many subtle nods to ancient Celtic rituals
  • John Carpenter produced the film and composed the score but did not direct
Rental memory: This was the tape you rented when you wanted something different. At first you were confused where is Michael Myers but halfway through you were hooked by how bizarre it got. It was the kind of horror that felt wrong in the best way.

Box detail: Some early VHS boxes were plain black with just the pumpkin face. Others had the silhouette of the children trick or treating with a fiery sunset behind them. Later versions included a small warning that Michael Myers does not appear in this film.
