On this day, December 14, 1984, David Lynch’s ambitious adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic Dune premiered in theaters. Featuring an ensemble cast that included Kyle MacLachlan, Francesca Annis, Patrick Stewart, and Sting, the film brought the vast and intricate world of Arrakis to life.

With a production budget of $42 million, Dune was one of the most expensive films of its time. However, its box office performance fell short, earning $37.9 million. Critics were divided on its dense narrative and visual style, but the film has since achieved cult status for its unique approach to Herbert’s classic novel.
