On This Day: May 9, 1989 - Madonna Releases Express Yourself
On this day May 9, 1989, Madonna released Express Yourself, the second single from her fourth studio album Like a Prayer. The empowering anthem encouraged self confidence and independence, especially for women, and quickly became one of her most iconic hits.

Express Yourself reached number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Dance Club charts. It also hit number 1 in Canada and Switzerland, further cementing Madonna’s global influence. The track’s bold sound was matched by an equally ambitious music video directed by David Fincher, featuring futuristic visuals and themes of control and liberation.

Fun fact: The music video for Express Yourself was, at the time, the most expensive video ever made, with a budget of around 5 million dollars.
