On This Day: March 15 1980 Sanford Premiered on NBC
On this day March 15 1980 the sitcom Sanford premiered on NBC. Starring Redd Foxx the show served as a sequel to the classic series Sanford and Son continuing the story of Fred Sanford and his junk business.

Unlike its predecessor Sanford did not feature Lamont as actor Demond Wilson declined to return. Instead Fred was joined by new characters including his business partner Cal. While the show maintained the humor and wit of the original it struggled to capture the same magic and lasted only two seasons with 26 episodes.

Fun fact: Redd Foxx left Sanford and Son in 1977 due to contract disputes but returned for Sanford after an unsuccessful variety show attempt.

Trivia question: What was the name of Fred Sanford’s late wife who he frequently referenced in Sanford and Son?
