Wow, reading this brought back so many memories. It’s wild how much freedom we had as kids back then. Riding bikes until the streetlights came on, taping songs off the radio, and just being outside all the time without a care in the world. You nailed it! There was a whole vibe to growing up in the 80s that today’s kids won’t ever fully understand. I especially liked your perspective on how girls in the 80s navigated things. The fashion, the magazines those slumber parties. It’s so different from what you see now. It wasn’t perfect but it was real. And we were tougher than we looked even with jelly bracelets and side ponytails.
Thanks for writing this. Made me smile the whole way through. Someone who still rewinds tapes with a pencil from time to time lol.
Not like the way we experienced it. We were at the mercy of the television networks. I always remember the excitement when a movie I liked was going to be on tv. Sure we had video stores but you had to worry if the movie you wanted to rent wasn’t taken by someone else. These kids will never know.
Honestly I think about that all the time. We had to actually remember phone numbers and show up on time because there was no way to text someone if you were running late. I used to carry a little address book in my purse just in case and if you wanted to learn something you had to look it up in an encyclopedia or go to the library. It sounds exhausting now but I kind of miss how present we all were. No notifications, no scrolling, just living in the moment. Can you imagine them going back to a time where we didn’t have internet and smartphones???????
