On this day, December 11, 1987, the dark comedy Throw Momma From the Train premiered in theaters. Directed by Danny DeVito, the film starred DeVito himself alongside Billy Crystal and Anne Ramsey in a hilarious yet twisted tale inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train.

The story follows Larry (Crystal), a frustrated writer, and Owen (DeVito), an eccentric man who proposes they “swap murders” to rid each other of their problems—Larry’s ex-wife and Owen’s overbearing mother. Anne Ramsey’s unforgettable performance as the domineering Momma earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

With a budget of $14 million, the film was a box office hit, grossing $57.9 million and becoming a cult favorite for fans of dark humor.
