On this day, October 17, 1989, the 6.9 magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area during a live broadcast of the World Series. The quake tragically killed 63 people and injured 3,757 others, causing an estimated $6 billion in damage. It was a historic moment, as the Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants were playing the World Series at the time.
