On this day, November 2, 1984, The Killing Fields, directed by Roland Joffé, premiered in theaters. Starring Sam Waterston, Haing S. Ngor, and John Malkovich, the film depicts the harrowing true story of the Cambodian genocide and the friendship between journalist Sydney Schanberg and his interpreter, Dith Pran. With a budget of $14.4 million, The Killing Fields was both a critical and commercial success, grossing $34.7 million. Haing S. Ngor, who portrayed Dith Pran, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his powerful performance.
