On this day, December 16, 1983, The Keep, a supernatural horror film directed by Michael Mann, premiered in the United States. Based on the novel by F. Paul Wilson, the film tells the eerie tale of a group of Nazi soldiers who unwittingly unleash an ancient evil while occupying a mysterious fortress in Romania during World War II.

With striking visuals, a haunting score by Tangerine Dream, and a dark, atmospheric tone, The Keep has developed a cult following despite its troubled production and mixed reviews upon release.
