On this day, December 16, 1983, The Iron Sheik defeated Bob Backlund to win the WWF Heavyweight Championship. The victory came after Backlund’s manager, Arnold Skaaland, threw in the towel during the match when Backlund was trapped in Sheik’s signature move, the Camel Clutch.

The Iron Sheik’s reign was short-lived, as he lost the title to Hulk Hogan on January 23, 1984. This marked the beginning of Hulkamania and a new era for professional wrestling. Despite the brief reign, The Iron Sheik’s victory over Backlund remains one of the pivotal moments in WWF history.
