VHS Shelf Entry #005
The Goonies (1985)
Directed by:
Richard Donner
Starring: Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Quan, Martha Plimpton
Studio: Warner Bros.
Original Release: June 7, 1985
VHS Release: 1986
Tagline: The adventure is real. The treasure is hidden. The only thing they’re missing is... the Goonies.

This was the ultimate kid-powered adventure of the 80s. Traps, treasure, pirates, and one unforgettable underground journey — The Goonies packed more excitement into a single movie than most series did in three. It was bold, funny, dangerous, and had just the right mix of chaos and heart. Renting it on VHS felt like joining the gang for one more trip down the water slide into the unknown.

Trivia:
  • The pirate ship was built full scale and the cast was not allowed to see it until filming to capture their real reactions
  • The deleted octopus scene was fully filmed and scored but cut late in editing. It appears on some VHS promos
  • Jeff Cohen (Chunk) was actually sick during the infamous Truffle Shuffle scene, which added to the realism
  • The film’s working title was The Goon Kids early in pre-production
  • Spielberg personally storyboarded many of the chase and trap scenes
  • The name One-Eyed Willy is never spoken by the adults, only by the kids
  • A young Josh Brolin admitted in interviews that he had no idea what was going on half the time during shooting
  • Sean Astin accidentally took home a key prop, the treasure map, and his mother later found it folded in a drawer

Rental memory: The tape always had a slightly warped sound during the credits, like it had been rewound hundreds of times. It was one of those movies kids knew by heart and rented anyway

Box detail: Early print runs featured a gold Warner clamshell case with silver text. Some regional variants listed it as A Steven Spielberg Presentation in larger font than the title itself.
