On this day, December 12, 1986, the fantasy-comedy The Golden Child premiered in theaters. Starring Eddie Murphy in one of his signature 80s roles, the film blended action, humor, and mysticism as Murphy’s character, Chandler Jarrell, embarks on a quest to save a mystical child destined to bring peace to the world.

Directed by Michael Ritchie and co-starring Charlotte Lewis, Charles Dance, and J.L. Reate, the film was a box office hit, grossing $79.8 million worldwide against a $25 million budget. Although it received mixed reviews at the time, Eddie Murphy’s charisma and comedic timing made it a memorable entry in his filmography.
