VHS Shelf Entry #008
The Fog (1980)
Directed by:
John Carpenter
Starring: Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, Hal Holbrook, Janet Leigh
Studio: Avco Embassy Pictures
Original Release: February 1, 1980
VHS Release: 1982
Tagline: Lock your doors. Bolt your windows. There is something in the fog

This was a ghost story for people who liked their horror slow and creepy. The Fog was not loud or flashy. It built its fear the old fashioned way with shadows and silence. John Carpenter delivered another eerie classic and it quickly became a late night rental favorite.

The lighthouse. The voice on the radio. The glowing fog creeping into town. It did not need blood to get under your skin. The quieter it got the scarier it felt.

Trivia:

  • The film was originally rated PG but Carpenter added new scenes to push it to R.
  • The ghost pirates were played by crew members in backlit fog suits.
  • Adrienne Barbeau’s radio booth was a real lighthouse in Point Reyes California.
  • The movie was heavily re edited after test screenings to increase scares.
  • The title sequence was created using real fog pumped through miniature models.
  • Janet Leigh and Jamie Lee Curtis filmed together as a tribute to Psycho.

Rental memory: This tape was always found in the horror section beside Halloween and Christine. It was the one your friend told you was boring until you watched it alone and could not sleep.

Box detail: The first VHS release used a black and white silhouette of a figure in the mist. Later versions added more fog effects and bright red titles to compete on the shelf.
