On June 30, 1985, the 39 American hostages hijacked from TWA Flight 847 were freed in Beirut after a harrowing 17-day ordeal. The flight, originally scheduled to travel from Egypt to San Diego, was diverted by hijackers who demanded the release of 700 Shia Muslims held by Israel. The incident drew international attention and highlighted the intense geopolitical tensions of the time.
