On this day, December 2, 1988, the romantic crime thriller Tequila Sunrise premiered in theaters. Directed by Robert Towne, the film featured an all-star cast including Mel Gibson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, and Raul Julia.

With a budget of $23 million, the film grossed $105 million worldwide, including $25 million domestically. Tequila Sunrise combined romance, suspense, and action as it told the story of a former drug dealer (Gibson) trying to go straight while being pursued by both a federal agent (Russell) and a local crime lord (Julia), all while falling for a restaurant owner (Pfeiffer).
