On this day, December 14, 1984, Starman, directed by John Carpenter, premiered in theaters. The sci-fi romance starred Jeff Bridges as an alien who takes on a human form and Karen Allen as the widow who helps him navigate Earth while avoiding government capture.

Jeff Bridges earned an Academy Award nomination for his heartfelt performance as the alien struggling to understand human emotions and customs. Blending Carpenter’s unique style with a poignant love story, Starman became a standout in the sci-fi genre. Despite its modest box office performance of $28.7 million against a $24 million budget, it remains a cult classic.
