On this day, November 28, 1987, South African Airways Flight 295 tragically crashed into the Indian Ocean, claiming the lives of all 159 people on board. The Boeing 747 Combi aircraft, en route from Taiwan to Johannesburg with a stop in Mauritius, was carrying both passengers and cargo when a fire broke out in the cargo hold, leading to the devastating crash.

The incident, often referred to as the Helderberg disaster, remains one of South Africa’s worst aviation tragedies. It raised serious questions about cargo safety and led to stricter regulations on transporting flammable materials on aircraft.
