On this day September 7, 1988, INXS stole the spotlight at the 5th MTV Music Awards, taking home the coveted Video of the Year award for their hit Need You Tonight. The Australian band had a massive night, winning a total of five awards, including Best Group Video and the Viewers Choice Award. With nine nominations, INXS was the most-nominated and most-awarded act of the night.

Other notable winners included Prince for Best Male Video with U Got the Look and Suzanne Vega for Best Female Video with Luka. INXS’ Need You Tonight became an unforgettable music video that perfectly captured the spirit of the late 80s.
