On this day, December 14, 1984, Runaway, a sci-fi thriller directed by Michael Crichton, premiered in theaters. Starring Tom Selleck as a police officer specializing in malfunctioning robots, the film also featured Gene Simmons as a sinister villain, Cynthia Rhodes, and Kirstie Alley.

Set in a futuristic world, Runaway combined high-tech thrills with a suspenseful storyline involving robotic assassins and advanced technology gone awry. Despite its innovative concept, the film struggled at the box office, grossing $6.7 million against an $8 million budget.
