Road Fighter
A top view racing game. You have to reach the finish line before time runs out. Don't crash into the wall, cars or trucks. Because if you do you will lose gasoline. You can get additional gasoline by picking up fuel items. Especially avoid the purple cars, they do change lanes! And remember... oil makes road slippery...

It sounds like you're describing "Road Fighter," a classic arcade racing game developed and published by Konami in 1984. This game was notable for its top-down perspective, which was quite popular in racing games of the era. Players had to navigate through traffic, avoid obstacles, and manage their fuel consumption to reach the finish line before time ran out.

The game was well-received for its challenging gameplay and was later ported to several home platforms, including the MSX and Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The NES version, released in 1990, brought the arcade experience to home consoles, allowing players to enjoy the fast-paced action without needing a pocketful of quarters.

"Road Fighter" is remembered fondly for its vibrant graphics and engaging mechanics, such as the lane-changing purple cars and slippery oil spills, which added an extra layer of difficulty and excitement. It's a great example of the arcade racing genre that was thriving in the 1980s.
