On this day September 7 1982, the musical Cats opened on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City, beginning a legendary 18 year run. Composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and based on T S Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the production became one of the most successful and iconic musicals of the 1980s.
