On this day September 5, 1986, Dire Straits’ iconic hit “Money for Nothing” took home the award for “Music Video of the Year” at the 3rd MTV Music Awards. It was a major win for the band, whose innovative video combined live-action and animation, pushing the boundaries of what music videos could achieve.

That night, other big winners included Robert Palmer, who won “Best Male Video” for “Addicted to Love,” and Whitney Houston, who claimed “Best Female Video” for her hit “How Will I Know.” Dire Straits also snagged “Best Group Video” for “Money for Nothing,” while a-ha’s groundbreaking “Take on Me” video earned them the “Viewers Choice” award. In fact, a-ha had a massive night, walking away with 8 awards!
