On this day September 22, 1989 the sitcom Family Matters premiered. Set in Chicago, the series followed the Winslow family, a middle-class household headed by Carl and Harriette Winslow. While the show began as a traditional family sitcom, it soon became famous for the introduction of Steve Urkel, a quirky neighbor whose popularity turned him into the central figure of the series.
