On this day September 12, 1981, The Smurfs, the beloved animated series, made its debut on NBC. The show quickly became a massive hit, running for nine seasons with a total of 256 episodes. The Smurfs’ adventures, set in their charming forest village, captivated audiences worldwide with its endearing characters like Papa Smurf, Smurfette, and Brainy Smurf.

What many may not know is that The Smurfs actually began as a Belgian comic strip in 1958 called Les Schtroumpfs. Created by the artist Peyo, the comic’s popularity in Europe eventually led to the production of the animated series that took the world by storm.
