On this day October 17 1989, a massive 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area, shaking the region just before Game 3 of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics. The broadcast cut off live on national television as the quake caused widespread panic and damage.
