On this day May 18, 1985, Simple Minds reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with their breakthrough hit Don't You Forget About Me. The song held the top spot in America from May 18 through May 24 and also reached number one in Canada and the Netherlands, becoming one of the most iconic tracks of the 1980s.

I remember when this song was everywhere. It felt like it was always on the radio or playing in the background at the mall. I did not actually see The Breakfast Club right away, but once I did, that final scene with the music playing stayed with me. It was one of those perfect movie moments.

Even now, when I hear the song, it brings back that whole feeling of the mid 80s. Driving around, windows down, not a care in the world. Simple Minds really captured something special with this one.
