On this day May 13, 1981, Pope John Paul II was shot and critically wounded in an assassination attempt at St Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The attacker, Mehmet Ali Ağca, fired multiple rounds at close range, striking the pope twice as he rode in an open vehicle greeting crowds during a general audience.
