On May 11, 1987, Swedish band Bathory released their third studio album Under the Sign of the Black Mark, a raw and aggressive record that helped lay the foundation for the black metal genre. Led by the mysterious Quorthon, the album pushed beyond thrash into darker, more atmospheric territory that would influence countless metal acts in the decades that followed.

Its lo fi production, haunting riffs, and mythological themes made it a defining moment in extreme metal history.
