On this day March 6 1988 the crime drama series In the Heat of the Night premiered on NBC. Based on the 1967 film and 1965 novel of the same name the show starred Carroll O’Connor as Chief Bill Gillespie and Howard Rollins as Detective Virgil Tibbs. The series followed their efforts to maintain law and order in a racially tense Southern town blending crime-solving with deep social issues.
