On This Day: June 3, 1980 – Explosion Damages the Statue of Liberty.

On this day June 3, 1980, an explosion occurred at the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. The blast caused significant damage to the base and surrounding observation deck, injuring several people and forcing the closure of the monument for repairs.
