On this day, November 22, 1980, Eddie Murphy made his debut as a cast member on Saturday Night Live. His first appearance was in a non-speaking role in a sketch titled “In Search for the Negro Republican.”

Though this initial role was minor, it marked the beginning of Murphy’s meteoric rise on the show. He would go on to become one of SNL’s most iconic performers, delivering unforgettable characters like Buckwheat, Gumby, and Mr. Robinson, and eventually launching a legendary career in comedy and film.
