On this day April 5, 1987, Married with Children premiered on the newly launched Fox Network and instantly turned the family sitcom formula upside down. Starring Ed O’Neill as the bitter shoe salesman Al Bundy, the show introduced audiences to a hilariously dysfunctional household that was nothing like the squeaky clean families seen on other networks.

Oh my god Married with Children was everything. The hair, the outfits, the complete refusal to cook anything… iconic. And Al? That poor man’s misery somehow made the whole show even funnier. He hated everything and we loved him for it. It wasn’t polished or politically correct and that’s what made it perfect. It felt like the anti sitcom especially compared to all the wholesome family shows on at the time. This one was messy, loud, and totally hilarious. To this day I still quote Peg and Kelly without even realizing it. I don’t care what anyone says, that show had guts. Totally ahead of its time and still better than half the stuff on TV now. Anyone else secretly want a Bundy family reunion?
