On this day, December 9, 1988, the sci-fi comedy My Stepmother Is an Alien premiered in theaters. Directed by Richard Benjamin, the film starred Dan Aykroyd as a scientist who unwittingly attracts an alien played by Kim Basinger, who comes to Earth on a mission but ends up falling in love.

The cast also featured comedic talents like Jon Lovitz and young stars Seth Green, Juliette Lewis, and Alyson Hannigan. Despite its quirky premise and a $19 million budget, the film underperformed at the box office, grossing $13.8 million.
