VHS Shelf Entry #009
My Bodyguard (1980)
Directed by:
Tony Bill
Starring: Chris Makepeace, Adam Baldwin, Matt Dillon, Martin Mull, Ruth Gordon
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Original Release: July 11, 1980
VHS Release: 1982
Tagline: Terror in the lunchroom. Trouble in the hallways. One kid decides to fight back

This was one of those smaller movies that hit hard for the right people. My Bodyguard told a simple story about bullying friendship and standing up for yourself. No fantasy or special effects just something honest and real. The kind of film parents rented for their kids and ended up watching themselves.

Long before teen dramas became common this one paved the way.

Rental memory: The tape looked plain but once you watched it you remembered it. This was one of those rentals you found on a recommendation from a sibling or teacher and ended up loving.

Box detail: Early VHS copies used a soft toned photo of the main characters walking through a schoolyard. Some releases had a gold sticker that called it the sleeper hit of the summer.
