On this day, December 4, 1980, Led Zeppelin officially announced their breakup following the tragic death of their legendary drummer, John Bonham. Bonham passed away on September 25, 1980, at the age of 34 due to pulmonary aspiration after consuming 40 shots of vodka.

The band stated in their official announcement, “We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were.” This decision marked the end of one of rock’s most iconic bands, whose influence on music and culture remains unparalleled.
