On this day, January 5, 1987, Huey Lewis and the News released Jacob’s Ladder as a single from their chart-topping album, Fore! The song, written by Bruce and John Hornsby, carries a reflective message about resisting societal pressures and climbing life’s metaphorical ladder on one’s own terms.

Jacob’s Ladder became a massive hit, eventually reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the week of March 14–20, 1987. This marked the band’s third #1 single, following the success of The Power of Love and Stuck with You. Its steady rhythm and catchy lyrics solidified the group’s standing as one of the most successful acts of the 80s.

Fun Fact: Bruce Hornsby, co-writer of the song, later gained fame with his band Bruce Hornsby and the Range, but Jacob’s Ladder remains one of his most notable contributions as a songwriter.

What’s your favorite Huey Lewis and the News song? Do you think Jacob’s Ladder deserved its #1 spot, or do you prefer their other hits?
