On this day, January 29, 1984, President Ronald Reagan formally announced his candidacy for re-election. With a campaign slogan of "Morning in America," Reagan aimed to highlight the economic recovery and optimistic outlook of the United States under his leadership.

Later that year, Reagan won the election in a landslide, defeating Democratic candidate Walter Mondale. Reagan carried 49 out of 50 states and secured 525 electoral votes to Mondale's 13, marking one of the most decisive victories in U.S. presidential history.

Fun Fact: Geraldine Ferraro, Mondale’s running mate, became the first woman nominated for vice president by a major party in U.S. history.

Trivia Question: What was the name of Reagan's first campaign slogan when he initially ran for president in 1980?
