On this day, January 28, 1985, How Soon Is Now? by The Smiths was reissued as an A-side single in the United Kingdom. Originally appearing as a B-side on the 1984 single William, It Was Really Nothing, this reissue gave the track its much-deserved spotlight, solidifying its status as one of The Smiths’ most iconic songs.

Written by Morrissey and Johnny Marr, How Soon Is Now? is celebrated for its haunting lyrics and Marr’s mesmerizing tremolo guitar riff, which has become one of the most recognizable in alternative music. Though it only reached #24 on the UK Singles Chart, the song has since been regarded as one of the greatest tracks of the 1980s and a defining anthem for The Smiths.

Fun Fact: Johnny Marr created the signature tremolo guitar sound using a borrowed Fender Twin Reverb amplifier.

Trivia Question: Which classic 90s TV show used How Soon Is Now? as its theme song in the United States?
