On this day, January 21, 1984, progressive rock band Yes reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with their iconic single Owner of a Lonely Heart. The song remained the #1 song in America for two weeks, from January 21 to February 3, marking the band’s first and only chart-topping hit.

Featured on their 11th studio album, 90125, Owner of a Lonely Heart showcased a bold departure from Yes’s traditional progressive rock sound, embracing a more radio-friendly style with electronic elements and sharp production. The track’s memorable guitar riff and innovative production helped solidify its status as a defining song of the 80s.

Fun Fact: The track was produced by Trevor Horn, formerly of The Buggles, who also provided the distinctive sampled effects heard throughout the song.

Trivia Question: What was the name of Yes’s original lead singer, who co-founded the band in 1968?
