On this day, January 18, 1985, The New Kids, a thriller directed by Sean S. Cunningham, premiered in theaters. Starring Shannon Presby, Lori Loughlin, Eric Stoltz, and James Spader, the film followed two orphaned siblings who move to a small Florida town and find themselves targeted by a sadistic gang.

Despite its intriguing premise and a strong cast, including James Spader in one of his early villainous roles, the film struggled at the box office, grossing only $199,000 against its $6 million budget. However, The New Kids has since gained a cult following for its tense atmosphere and gritty storytelling.

Fun Fact: Sean S. Cunningham, the director of The New Kids, is best known for creating the iconic horror franchise Friday the 13th.
