On this day, January 15, 1985, the Commodores released their twelfth studio album, Nightshift. This album marked a significant moment for the band, as it was their first major release after Lionel Richie’s departure in 1982. Despite the lineup change, Nightshift became a commercial and critical success, proving the Commodores could thrive in a new era.

The title track, Nightshift, was a heartfelt tribute to soul legends Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, who both passed away in 1984. The song became a global hit, reaching #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and winning the Commodores a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

Fun Fact: The inspiration for Nightshift came from the Commodores’ admiration for Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, and the song remains one of the most enduring tributes in music history.

Trivia Question: What year did the Commodores first achieve a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with their classic ballad Three Times a Lady?
